Chad is one of the most vulnerable countries in the world and has ranked among the lowest in the Human Development Index (HDI) for several years. Its population is very young – the median age is 15.8 years – and exceeds 16 million.
The consequences of climate change, including frequent droughts and floods, make agricultural production difficult. The lack of economic prospects for young people also poses a major challenge. Furthermore, the country is under significant strain due to the influx of refugees from neighbouring countries and recurring food crises.
FH Switzerland has been supporting projects there since 2025.
What are we doing in Chad?
Agriculture and the fight against food insecurity
In the face of the effects of climate change, we are helping to build the resilience of small-scale family farms, in particular by promoting agroecological techniques and approaches.

Water and sanitation
We support access to water by helping to build wells. To reduce domestic organic pollution, we also support eco-friendly sanitation through the construction of latrines in public places.
Support for economic development
We support the establishment of savings and solidarity groups to facilitate the development of small businesses.
Support for girls fleeing female genital mutilation
We support the work of the Beth Elpia shelter, which offers a safe haven to girls fleeing female genital mutilation, whilst enabling them to envisage an independent future through vocational training.
